A Metropolitan Police officer has been arrested on suspicion of playing a key role in a shoplifting ring at Heathrow.

It followed an investigation into the theft of high-value goods, believed to include cigarettes, from stores at the west London airport's terminal five.

The constable, who works in the aviation security unit, was arrested at his home in Reading, Berkshire.

A man, 43, and woman, in her 30s, were also arrested at their home in nearby Bracknell, on suspicion of theft.

All three are being questioned at a south London police station.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed and a decision on whether the officer should be suspended from duty will be made "in due course".
