A 14-year-old girl is in a critical condition after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run in south London.

Emergency services were called to Morland Road, in Croydon, at 1910 GMT on Friday.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the girl had been struck by a green Renault Clio, number plate T861 JKP, which failed to stop and was later found burnt out about a mile away.

The girl was taken to hospital suffering from a serious head injury.

The spokesman said the car had been found a short time after the incident in Davies Close, Croydon.

Officers believe the driver is a white man aged in his 20s and have urged witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information has been asked to contact the Metropolitan Police or Crimestoppers.
