A man's body has been found in the boot of a burnt out car in south-east London.

Police made the discovery at 0200 GMT in Angerstein Lane, Blackheath.

The body of a man, believed to be in his 20s, was found in the boot of the blue Mercedes after firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Officers, who believe they know who the deceased man is, said it was not yet clear if the man was already dead when the car was set on fire

The victim's next of kin have been informed but he has not been formally identified.

Patrolling officers found the car, a Mercedes C-class with the number plate V362 SCL, on fire in a side street near Greenwich Park.

Det Ch Insp Damian Allain said: "We are appealing for anyone who was in or around the Angerstein Lane area that may have seen this car either arrive or seen anyone acting suspiciously as the car was left ablaze, to contact us.

"We already know that the car was last seen around 1730 GMT in south east London, so we are also appealing to anyone who can help us identify how the car came to be in Angerstein Lane.

"At this early stage we don't believe that this was a random killing, and are exploring the line of inquiry that this was a targeted attack against our victim."
