Grime artist jailed for shooting in south London

A grime musician has been jailed for six years for shooting a man in the shoulder in south London.

Taurean Taylor, 26, of Rye Hill, East Dulwich, south London, shot 25-year-old Marcus Bennett on Peckham Rye Estate on 26 January 2009.

Mr Bennett took himself to hospital and made a full recovery, but refused to assist police and did not give evidence.

Taylor, known as Kyze, featured on an album by rap artist Giggs.

Grime music has its roots in east London and is said to be a combination of drum 'n' bass, punk and hip hop.

Same gun

The shooting occurred after the two men had been arguing about money.

Prosecutor Anthony Orchard said Taylor had fired three bullets at Mr Bennett but only one had struck him.

Taylor was convicted after secretly recorded conversations with his visitors at Belmarsh prison when he was on remand caught him confessing to shooting Mr Bennett.

Judge Paul Worsleye told Taylor: "Gun violence with loaded weapons on the streets of this city has got to be stopped."

The Old Bailey was told that the same gun used to shoot Mr Bennett had also been used to kill Errol Davis, 24, and Larry Safie, 25, in separate incidents.

Taylor was found not guilty of both murders after a retrial.
