Man critical after 'unprovoked' Brick Lane attack

A man has been critically injured in what police have said was an unprovoked attack in east London.

The 23-year-old victim was found collapsed and unconscious in Pitfield Street, Shoreditch, in the early hours of Saturday.

He was taken to hospital where he is being treated for head injuries.

Police said a male suspect, described as black and aged between 20-25, was seen heading south along Brick Lane, where the attack took place.

The victim is understood to have left the scene of the attack at about 0130 BST before collapsing several streets away.

He was found at about 1500 BST by an ambulance crew who alerted the police.

Urging witnesses to contact police, Det Sgt Ian Harkes said: "This would appear to be an unprovoked and vicious attack on a young man who was out enjoying the friendly local atmosphere that Brick Lane normally offers."
