Mitcham car thief runs over two women

A man has seriously injured two women by running them over in south London.

The victims were showing him an Audi A3 which had been advertised for sale when he suddenly sped off in the vehicle on Dorset Road, Mitcham, on Tuesday.

A 54-year-old was dragged 4m (13ft) along the road while she was trapped under the car and is in a stable but critical condition in hospital.

A pregnant 33-year-old, who was the owner of the vehicle, was also hurt but has now been discharged by medics.

'Mown down'

The man was inspecting the car, which had the registration plate KU08 UEZ, at 1930 BST.

He locked himself inside, started the engine and deliberately drove at the women, police said.

He was last seen heading along Western Road, Mitcham, and then outside Tooting mainline railway station.

He "thought nothing of mowing down" the pair, said Det Ch Insp Adnan Qureshi of the Metropolitan Police.

The suspect was described as being about 35 years old and of stocky build.

He has a distinctive scar which runs across the right side of his forehead and down his nose.
