PC Alex MacFarlane to face trial on riots race abuse charge

A Metropolitan Police officer will face trial on 15 October over claims he racially abusing a suspect after last year's riots in London.

PC Alex MacFarlane, 53, denied causing racially aggravated intentional harassment, alarm or distress to Mauro Demetrio on 11 August 2011.

The trial at Southwark Crown Court is expected to last for three days.

Mr MacFarlane was charged after the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reversed its original decision.

Earlier the CPS said its decision to charge the officer hinged on mobile phone footage, allegedly taken by Mr Demetrio, from Beckton, east London, last August.
