Shammi Atwal lorry death: Men charged with manslaughter

Two men have been charged with the manslaughter of a cash and carry owner who was struck by a lorry as he chased robbers from his store in east London.

Shammi Atwal confronted a gang armed with metal bars and a sledgehammer at Glen and Co Cash and Carry in River Road, Barking, on 14 October.

Deibidas Sumskas and Edgaras Balezantis, both 25, are also charged with conspiracy to commit robbery.

Three other men face manslaughter charges over the death.

Mr Atwal, a father of two, lived in Chigwell.

Mr Sumskas, of Ottley Road in Canning Town, and Edgaras Balezantis, of Tollgate Road in East Ham, were remanded in custody when they appeared at Barkingside Magistrates Court.

They will appear at the Old Bailey later this month.

Reiniks Kivers, 27, of no fixed address, Vidmantas Gonskoves, 26, of Plaistow, and Aurimas Diliunas, 27, from Barking, have also been charged with manslaughter.

All five men face a charge of robbery along with Farhan Sheikh, 38, also from Barking.
