A man has died after being found lying in the road 90 minutes after a woman was murdered one street away.

The dead man and woman were in their 20s and knew each other, but were not related, police said.

The woman was stabbed repeatedly in Ilford, east London, at about 17:30 GMT, and was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

The man was found collapsed in the street at about 19:00 and died soon after arriving at hospital.

The Metropolitan Police said the woman was attacked in Valentines Road and suffered multiple stab wounds.

The man was found in nearby Auckland Road.

"Both deaths are being investigated by officers from the homicide and major crime command based at Barking," a police statement said.

"The death of the woman... is being treated as murder. At this early stage there is no evidence to suggest that the death of the man is suspicious."

Officers said the bodies had not been formally identified and post-mortem examinations were to be carried out.
