Man held hostage for cigarettes in Standish

A driver was held hostage by robbers who stole boxes of cigarettes from the back of his van in Greater Manchester.

The 52-year-old was dragged from his vehicle as he was parked up in Elmfield Road, Standish, on Thursday afternoon.

Two men, wielding claw hammers and wearing masks, guarded him in their van while two others raided his white Mercedes.

Police said the ordeal lasted about 20 minutes before he was left in Almond Brook Road, Standish.

The suspects were all described as white, spoke with Liverpudlian accents and wore dark clothing and balaclavas.

Det Insp Theresa Carter said "The van driver was put through an unimaginably horrible experience and we are doing everything possible to find those responsible as nobody should have to go through this during a regular working day.

"Our officers are keen to speak to anyone who saw anything that might be relevant, knows something about the incident or where those boxes of cigarettes are now."
