A woman was left with a puncture wound to her abdomen after being attacked by a gang in Rochdale, Greater Manchester.

The 47-year-old was walking along Sandy Lane with her husband and another couple when between six and eight youths circled them on Tuesday night.

As they hurled abuse at them, one of them slapped her before hitting her in the side. When she got home she noticed the wound, which was bleeding.

Police are investigating what kind of weapon was used to cause the injury.

Det Con Heidi Edge said: "This was a totally unprovoked attack that, thankfully, was not as serious as it could have been.

"The use of such wanton violence is something Greater Manchester Police takes extremely seriously because no-one should be intimidated or attacked in this way."

Anyone with information is asked to contact officers.
