Police are hunting thieves who stole two flag poles from a war memorial in Greater Manchester.
Officers said a "tremendous amount of distress" had been caused by the theft of the poles from the Church Street memorial in Leigh.
They were reported missing on 10 August but could have been taken up to four days earlier, police believe.
Greater Manchester Police are carrying out inquiries in the town and are appealing for information.
Pc Barry Willans, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "It is hard to understand exactly why someone would want to steal these flag poles, but the offenders need to understand that their actions have caused a tremendous amount of distress.
"We have been in regular contact with the British Legion who are understandably keen for justice to be carried out.
"We are appealing to anyone who was in Leigh on this particular weekend who may have seen anything that may assist this investigation to call us."
