Man posing as police officer robs woman at knifepoint

A man posing as a police officer robbed a woman at knifepoint in her Greater Manchester home.

The robber, wearing a fluorescent jacket, knocked on a side door of the house in Haughton Green on Thursday night, saying he was from the police.

When the woman, 40, opened the door, he grabbed her, picked up a knife and held it against her mouth and throat.

He tied her up with a lamp cord and stole her bank card, engagement ring, mobile phone and Sky box.

'Cruel and calculating'

Ch Insp Stuart Wrudd, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "This was a truly cowardly act.

"In her own home, where she looks after her mum, she was confronted by violence and intimidation by this callous thief.

"The offender had clearly thought his plan through by wearing the jacket to give him the appearance of a police officer, so not only is he cruel but he is also calculating."

Police have appealed to anyone with information to get in touch and have urged people to be careful when answering the door.

The man is described as white, about 40, 5ft 10in (1.8m) and of a thin build with wide eyes.

He was wearing a black hat, a dark scarf covering his face and neck, black clothing and the florescent jacket.
