A 27-year-old man is being treated in hospital after being shot in Salford.
Officers found the victim after being called to Hodge Lane, Pendleton but it is not yet known where the shooting took place.
The man, who had suffered gunshot wounds to his arm and legs, was taken to hospital by ambulance and remains in a stable condition.
Extra patrols are being carried out in the area to reassure the community while police hunt the gunman.
Supt Wayne Miller, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "I want to reassure the community we have a team of detectives from our Major Incident Team investigating this incident and we are doing all we can to find out who is responsible.
"There is no need for local residents to be unduly concerned and there are extra officers in and around the area if you want to talk to us or have any worries.
"Someone in Salford will know exactly what happened and why and I am urging them to come forward and help us. Your information will be treated in absolute confidence."
