A couple from Oldham have appeared in court charged with offences under the Terrorism Act.

Mohammed Sajid Khan, 33, and his wife Shasta Khan, 37, from Foster Street, are accused of engaging in conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism.

The alleged offences are said to have taken place between August 2010 and July 2011.

They are due to appear at the Old Bailey on 22 August. Mr Khan has been remanded in custody.

Terrorism unit investigation

The couple appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court earlier and spoke only to confirm their names, ages and address.

Mr Khan has been charged with conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism.

Mrs Khan has been charged with possessing information likely to be useful to a person committing an act of terrorism.

The charges follow an investigation carried out by the North West Counter Terrorism Unit.

"There is no evidence to suggest any communities in Greater Manchester or the surrounding areas are at immediate risk," police said.
