Prestwich shop robbers throw axe at police

Armed robbers who forced their way into a shop in Greater Manchester threw an axe at police before fleeing.

Four men armed with an axe broke into a Carphone Warehouse on Bury New Road, Prestwich, at 18:00 GMT on Wednesday while staff members were still inside.

The shop workers locked themselves in a store room and called the police.

As the men were leaving, a police car arrived and an axe was thrown at the driver's window, smashing it, and causing minor injuries to an officer.

The men escaped in a green VW Golf. Police said they had only managed to steal items belonging to staff from behind the till.

Det Con David Thorpe said: "Staff were left terrified and knew these men meant business. Fortunately no one was hurt.

"When the offenders left the store, they showed a complete disregard for the officer's safety and threw an axe directly at the police car.

"It's a miracle the officer received only minor injuries."
