Bolton Market to get £4.5m refurbishment

Design for Bolton Market

A £4.5m refurbishment of Bolton Market has been approved by councillors.

The work, which is expected to be completed by 2014, will see the building's roof repaired and improvements made to the eastern hall.

The revamp will also see a new outdoor market open alongside the redeveloped market halls.

Council leader Cliff Morris said the market was "a vital asset" which the town needed to "safeguard for the future".

He said it was "a vital employer" and "an incubator of new businesses, which is a particularly important function in these tough economic times".

Traders at the market had been briefed on the plans at a special meeting in November.

Mr Morris said the council would be "working closely with the traders, consulting with them regularly and involving them in relevant decisions as this refurbishment scheme continues".
