'Human remains' found beneath M60 flyover at Stockport

Police are investigating whether bones found beneath a motorway flyover in Stockport are human.

The remains were discovered near to junction 3 of the M60 near Cheadle at 11:45 GMT.

Police said they did not yet know if there were any suspicious circumstances.

Det Ch Insp Sara Wallwork, of Stockport CID, said police did not know whether the bones were male or female or how long they had been there.

She said: "We are in the process of conducting a careful examination of the location and only when this has been done will we begin to recover the remains for further examination.

"I know there will be some concern and speculation and I would ask the local community to bear with us while we carry out what will need to be a careful and thorough investigation."

The A34 slip road on to the M56 has been shortened while the incident is dealt with and there is likely to be a police presence at the location for several days, police said.
