Woman dies after Manchester supermarket fall

A woman has died days after she fell over in a Manchester supermarket and fractured her hip.

Joan Wilson, 78, from Withington, was in Sainsbury's in Birchfield Road, Fallowfield, on 7 April when she fell.

She was taken to hospital where she underwent surgery for a fractured hip, but died three days later.

Greater Manchester Police and environmental health are carrying out a joint investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the fall.

An inquest has been opened and adjourned at Manchester Coroner's Court, pending the results of the investigations.

A Sainsbury's spokesperson said: "We'd like to express our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Mrs Wilson for this tragedy.

"We are fully assisting the coroner in their investigation.

"It is of course inappropriate at this point to comment further about an ongoing inquest."
