A man in his 50s has died in a house fire in Greater Manchester.

Emergency services were called to the semi-detached house on Gladstone Street in Halliwell, Bolton, at 18:45 BST on Wednesday.

Fire crews found the man's body in an upstairs bedroom after putting out the "intense" fire. The rest of the house was badly smoke-damaged.

A joint investigation into how the fire started has been started by the fire service and Greater Manchester Police.

Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service station manager Ian Duckworth said: "It was a chaotic scene as the street was filled with neighbours and a large volume of smoke was coming from the house.

"This area of Halliwell has recently been targeted by a home safety campaign and crews will return to the area to give reassurance and safety advice tor residents."
