Middleton couple threatened with iron by intruders

A couple were threatened with their own hot iron by intruders who entered their Greater Manchester home.

Police said a 57-year-old man answered a call to the property in Alkrington Hall Road North, Middleton, between 18:30 BST and 19:45 BST on Wednesday.

Three men, including one armed with a hammer, entered and threatened the man and his 55-year-old wife. Pillowcases were then put over their heads.

The gang, who were wearing ski masks, stole cash and jewellery from the home.

Officers said the couple were tied up and only managed to raise the alarm about an hour after the intruders left.

Det Insp Andy Butterworth, from Greater Manchester Police, said: "The couple were having a quiet night at home when their lives have been turned upside down by these intruders.

"The men have made threats and used excessive violence against them to steal their personal belongings.

"The community will understandably be worried when they learn of this incident and I want to reassure them that crimes like this are rare, but when they do happen we will use all the resources available to us to investigate them."
