Bury 'speeding' car crash pair killed

Two men have died in a crash moments after their car was seen speeding through a Greater Manchester town by a police officer.

The officer saw the silver Volkswagen Polo with frosted windows on Bury Road, Radcliffe, at about 03:30 GMT.

He turned to follow the car but it had driven off. By the time he caught up with it it had overturned and struck a tree near Newbank Garden Centre.

The driver and a passenger died at the scene, Greater Manchester Police said.

The men have not yet been identified.

Road closed

The area has been sealed off for forensic examinations and an officer from the force's Professional Standards Branch was also called to the scene.

The force said the police driver has had his driving authority suspended, in line with standard procedure, while an investigation is carried out.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has confirmed it is investigating the incident.

Supt Steve Nibloe, said: "Tragically two men have died in this collision.

"They are yet to be identified or their relatives informed but we will have specially trained officers with their loved ones to support them as best we can as soon as we know who they are.

"Officers from our Serious Collision Investigation Unit are currently conducting enquiries at the scene and the road will remain shut while this happens.

"If anyone else has any information that may assist us I would urge them to contact us."
