A musician who was stabbed at a Salford flat on New Year's Day died from a single wound to the neck, a post-mortem examination has found.

Yuriy Kozak, 46, was found at the property on Rodney Street at about 16:30 GMT. He was taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead.

Mr Kozak moved to the UK from the Ukraine nine years ago.

Police have been given more time to question a 46-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder.

'Happy and smiling'

A 45-year-old man previously arrested on suspicion of murder and suspicion of assisting an offender has been released without charge in connection with the death but is on bail until Wednesday for the second offence, police said.

In a statement, Mr Kozak's widow, Helen, said: "Yuriy was a loving husband, father and brother to us all. He loved his family and was a real home-body.

"He used to be a music teacher in the Ukraine and taught children music at the Ukrainian Saturday School. He loved children and music was his passion. He played the piano and the guitar from being young.

"Yuriy had a good sense of humour and he was always happy and smiling. He was always joyful and liked to make people happy.

"He had many friends and was very popular in the community."
