A man has been arrested after attempting to break into a police museum in Manchester.

Officers were called to the Greater Manchester Police Museum on Newton Street at around 01:00 GMT on Tuesday after receiving reports of a break-in.

A spokeswoman said a window had been smashed and an attempt had been made to gain access via the back door.

She said a man who was spoken to at the scene was later recognised on CCTV and arrested in the Cheetham area.

The museum, opened in 1981, is housed in a former police station which was built in 1879.
