Arrest after girl, 13, raped on way to school in Wigan

A man has been arrested on suspicion of rape after a 13-year-old girl was attacked on her way to school in Greater Manchester.

The girl was walking in Wigan on Tuesday morning when a man threatened her, dragged her into an area of wasteland and raped her, police said.

She was left "absolutely distraught" by the attack, which took place between 07:30 and 08:30 BST, police said.

A 26-year-old man from Astley, Wigan was arrested and is being questioned.

Det Ch Insp Howard Millington said: "I want to stress that the investigation does not stop here.

"We are continuing to look into this most horrendous of crimes."
