Hand grenade find closes M61 motorway

A motorway was closed due to reports of a hand grenade found at nearby business premises in Greater Manchester.

Specialist bomb disposal officers carried out a controlled explosion at Station Road in Blackrod, near Bolton, at 15:30 BST.

A 100-metre cordon was put in place at 15:30 BST, which meant closing the M61 in both directions between junctions six and eight.

The road has since re-opened though motorists were warned to expect delays.
