A bride and groom spent their wedding night in police custody after they were arrested following an alleged assault on hotel staff.

The couple were detained by police as they tried to check in at Manchester's Hilton Hotel in Deansgate at about 23:30 BST on Saturday.

The 25-year-old man and 29-year-old woman, who had been married that day, were questioned on suspicion of affray and racially aggravated assault.

They were released on police bail.

The hotel declined to comment.

A Greater Manchester Police spokeswoman said: "Police attended and arrested a man and woman, who had been married that day, on suspicion of affray and racially aggravated assault."

"The couple were interviewed in police custody and have now been bailed whilst inquiries are conducted," she added.
