Man arrested over rape of girl, 13, in Manchester

A man has been arrested on suspicion of abducting and raping a 13-year-old girl in Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police said the girl, who was with friends, was seen walking off with an older man in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

A spokesman said when the girl's friends tried to follow her, they were stopped by a friend of the man.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape, child abduction and trafficking.

Another man, aged 23, has been arrested in connection with a sexual assault on a 16-year-old girl.

Det Insp Debbie Oakes said: "What has become apparent as part of this investigation is that there are men out there who are actively attempting to take advantage of younger girls.

"In some cases, they may try to encourage girls to engage in sexual acts in exchange for drugs, alcohol or similar.

"Quite simply this is dangerous, it is wholly immoral and it is criminal - it is exploitation in the most basic form."
