A man who was arguing with his girlfriend in the street has been left in a coma by an assailant who punched him after intervening, police said.

The victim was arguing with his partner after leaving McDonald's on Broad Street in Salford late on Sunday night when the man approached them.

He got involved with the argument and hit the victim, 44, twice, leaving him on the ground, a force spokesman said.

The spokesman said he should "search his conscience" and get in touch.

Greater Manchester Police described the suspect as a clean shaven, white man with blonde hair. He was wearing a black hooded top with a light T-shirt and blue jeans.
