A gang who attacked a man with knives on a Greater Manchester street have left him with "life changing" injuries, police have said.

The 23-year-old was found with head injuries and stab wounds by officers called to Oldham Road, Ashton-under-Lyne at around 05:00 BST.

A police spokesman said he was taken to hospital where the extent of his injuries was "still being assessed".

Three men, two aged 18 and one 20, have been arrested on suspicion of assault.

Police are searching for a fourth man.

He is described as about 6ft (1.8m) tall, white, aged about 25, with receding red hair and a tattoo on his neck.

Det Insp Julie Maxwell said the 23-year-old was "perhaps fortunate to not have died as a result of this attack, which has left him in hospital with a number of serious injuries".
