Police investigating a "prolonged and violent" attack on a man at a flat have made three arrests.

The 37-year-old was found badly injured at the property in Old Chapel Street, Stockport, Greater Manchester, at 19:10 GMT on Friday.

He was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Two men, aged 23 and 45 and a 52-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Police said officers were first called to the flat at about 17:20 GMT on Friday following reports of a burglary.

They spoke to a man suffering injuries to his face but he did not need further treatment.

Two hours later a joiner who went to the flat found the victim with more serious injuries and police were called again.

Det Insp Julia Bowden, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "The victim remains critically injured as a result of a prolonged and violent assault.

"Our investigation is progressing and we have made three arrests but I would still urge anyone with information to get in touch."
