The police response to a call about a man who died after an attack at his flat is being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

GMP officers first visited Christopher Fields' home, in Edgeley, Stockport, on 12 December 2014 after a burglary.

Mr Fields, 37, was taken by ambulance to hospital when police made a second visit two hours later.

The investigation follows a mandatory referral to the IPCC.

Mr Fields died nine days after the assault on Old Chapel Street.

An IPCC spokesman said the death following a police visit to his home led automatically to the mandatory referral to the commission.

IPCC Commissioner James Dipple-Johnstone said: "Our investigation will examine how GMP officers and staff responded to the first call made on 12 December."

A 23-year-old man was charged with murder in December.
