A section of the M60 motorway will be closed overnight as part of the £208m "smart motorway" project work on parts of the M60 and M62.

Highways England said the closures were needed to demolish overhead gantries.

The M60 clockwise between junction 12 at the M62/M602 interchange and junction 13 at Worsley will be shut between 22:00 and 06:00 BST.

The M62 eastbound link roads at junction 12 and the M602 westbound link road to the M60 will also be closed.

Highways England said a total of 16 overhead gantries needed to be demolished as they were not suitable for the electronic signs being installed for the "smart motorway scheme".

The motorway agency said there would be further closures in May and June, on dates yet to be confirmed.

The 17-mile "smart motorway" scheme between the M60 junction 8 near Sale and M62 junction 20 near Rochdale aims to cut congestion and improve journey times in Greater Manchester.

It is due to be completed in 2017.
