A woman who stole more than £200,000 from a relative with dementia has been jailed for three years and four months.

Krista Pennington, of Derbyshire Avenue, Stretford, was convicted at Manchester Minshull Street Crown court of fraud by abuse of position.

The court heard the 52-year-old had access to her relative's estate after she was moved into a nursing home.

After losing her job at the Trafford Centre, Pennington withdrew cash and bought cars, gifts and camping gear.

The thefts began when she took £20,000 from the account as her son had asked her for a loan.

Det Con Neil Tate of Greater Manchester Police said it was a "shameless abuse of trust on a vulnerable elderly woman".

He said: "It is shocking that someone would treat a vulnerable family member in this way by taking enormous sums of money for their own gain, and Pennington is fully deserving of the jail sentence she received."
