Merseyside man sentenced for child sex abuse

A Merseyside man who sexually abused a seven-year-old girl more than 35 years ago has received a nine-month suspended sentence.

David Bennett, 55, of Bebington, admitted gross indecency with a child and indecent assault on a child.

He has already been convicted of other historical sexual assaults on children, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

He sexually abused the girl at a house in Ashton-in-Makerfield where he was staying as a guest.

Although the abuse happened in the mid-seventies, she did not report the attack until June 2009, police said.

Det Con Paul Clayton said: "Bennett probably thought he had got away with these offences but his victim found the courage to report him and I am pleased justice has been done.

"The passage of time is no bar to justice and this case demonstrates that we will investigate all such reports thoroughly, regardless of how long ago they happened.

"I would like to take the opportunity to urge anyone who has been the victim of any sort of sexual abuse to contact police. We will robustly investigate your report and have specially trained officers who will work closely with you throughout the criminal process."
