Rape reports in Southport made up, police say

Two allegations of rape and sexual assault recently reported in Southport were made up, police have said.

Police said two women told them they had been attacked on Lord Street in the town on 24 September and 3 October.

Det Insp Lee Turner said the false allegations would have "caused considerable concern to the community of Southport."

He added: "We would like to reassure the public that these incidents did not happen."

"Southport is a safe place to visit and to enjoy a good night out.

"We take all reports of offences extremely seriously and those who make false claims are committing a criminal offence."

Police said the women had been reprimanded for their behaviour.
