Black ice causes crashes across Merseyside

Four vehicles have careered into a jack-knifed lorry as black ice causes problems across Merseyside.

Police officers are directing traffic at the scene, at the roundabout leading to the M62 at Rainhill stoops.

In St Helens seven vehicles have been involved in a pile up in Prescot Road.

A 44-year-old man suffered serious head injuries after his car span out of control on the Formby by-pass. Drivers are being told to be extra vigilant.

A man and a woman were taken to hospital with chest injuries after three vehicles collided in Scotland Road, just outside the city centre.

It is believed the crashes have been caused by dense fog and icy roads.

The Met Office has issued warnings across the county, after outbreaks of rain overnight in freezing temperatures have caused the roads and pavements to become extra slippy.
