Two workers have died at a chipboard factory on Merseyside.

Police said emergency services were called to reports that two men had been hurt at the Sonae factory on Moss Lane on Knowsley Industrial Estate, Kirkby.

Fire crews and paramedics, who were called to the factory at about 1545 GMT, tried to help the men but they died at the scene.

A joint investigation has been started by Merseyside Police and the Health and Safety Executive.

The area has been cordoned off and inquiries are under way.

Sonae, which makes woodchip for the construction and furniture industries, was fined £35,000 in 2003 for its part in an accident at the plant in which a worker broke his leg when he caught it in a piece of machinery.
