A demonstration against government spending cuts has taken place in Liverpool city centre.

The event, organised by the Public Sector Alliance and Merseyside Trades Union Council, began at the Metropolitan Cathedral at 1100 GMT.

Hundreds of people marched through the city centre before gathering outside the town hall for a rally.

Newly elected Unite general secretary Len McCluskey addressed the crowd in Castle Street.

Speaking before the event, he said: "Working people are under massive attacks now.

"This government is expecting them to pay, through job losses and public spending cuts, for the crisis created in the city and by the big banks.

"Resisting that assault must be the number one priority for any union leader."
