A man has died after he was shot in Cheshire in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Police found the man on Pepper Street, near the junction with Town Lane in Hale, Widnes, at about 0010 GMT.
Officers were called to the scene by local people who reported hearing gunshots in the area.
The man, who is in his 30s and from Widnes, was taken to hospital with a serious head injury but died soon afterwards.
Cheshire Police have increased patrols in the area to reassure people living in the local area.
Ch Supt Richard Strachan said: "Incidents such as this are rare not just in Widnes, but Cheshire as a whole.
"Our priority is the safety of our community and we are doing all we can to explore the circumstances surrounding this shooting and identify those responsible.
"Our thoughts and condolences are with with the family of the deceased."
The victim has not been named but his family has been informed.
