Man shot dead in Hale Village named

A man shot dead in Hale Village has been named by police.

Wayne Basnett, 30, from Hough Green, was found shot on Pepper Street in the village in Widnes, Cheshire, in the early hours of Wednesday.

He was taken to hospital but died soon afterwards. A post mortem examination showed he died from a single gun shot wound to the head.

Cheshire Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to contact them.

Officers were called to the scene at about 0010 GMT on Wednesday, by local people who reported hearing gunshots in the area.

The force has increased police patrols to reassure local residents.
