Detectives in Liverpool have started a murder inquiry after a 20-year-old man died after being shot in the chest.

Edward Pybis had been critically ill since the shooting in Anfield on 3 January and died on Sunday.

Merseyside Police believe the shooting happened on Utting Avenue and was a targeted attack.

Three men, aged 20, 21 and 22, were initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and last week were released on bail.

Family 'devastated'

Det Ch Insp Neil Clark, of Merseyside Police, said: "This young man has sadly died and we are now treating his death as a murder.

"He has lost his life in tragic circumstances and we are determined to bring those responsible for his murder to justice.

"His family are understandably devastated and our condolences go out to them.

"It is not clear at this stage how the victim came about his injuries on Monday and I would appeal for anyone out there with information about what happened to come forward."

Mr Pybis, who was from Norris Green, was taken to hospital by a third-party at about 1530 GMT on 3 January.

A post-mortem examination will now be carried out.
