Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service crews have been tackling a blaze at a disused gas tower in St Helens.

Smoke could be seen from some distance around the site in Jackson Street, prompting several members of the public to call the emergency services.

Eight fire engines arrived at the scene at about 1530 BST, where smoke was billowing out of the 90m (295ft) by 50m (164ft) tower.

A fire service spokeswoman said the cause had yet to be established.
