Liverpool's MMP factory closes with loss of over 100 jobs

More than 100 jobs have gone with the closure of a Liverpool packaging factory.

Mayr-Melnhof Packaging (MMP) in Dunnings Bridge Road shut in February after a dispute over redundancies.

Unite said MMP had dismissed 49 workers on "significantly poorer redundancy packages".

MMP said the decision to completely close the plant "reflects a continuing decline in the plant's international competitiveness".

The company said the job losses followed a series of redundancies earlier this year and previous redundancies in 2008 and 2010.

Unite claimed the Austrian packaging company, which produces boxes for cereals, had refused to "negotiate openly and fairly".

MMP spokesman Stephan Sweerts-Sporck said: "Over recent years, the company - together with the employee representatives - has tried very hard to protect as many jobs as possible for as long as possible.

"Ultimately however we have had to acknowledge the economic reality and the importance of meeting customer demand."
