A suspicious package left outside a job centre which led to the closure of part of Birkenhead town centre was "an elaborate hoax", police have said.

Army explosive ordinance experts investigated the device found outside Brunswick House on Price Street at about 07:20 BST.

Merseyside Police said the package was "not a viable device" and a forensic investigation was under way.

Roads in the area, which were cordoned off, were reopened at 11:15.

Det Insp Anne Rannard said: "Although this was not a viable device, someone had gone to great lengths to cause considerable disruption and upset this morning

"There is a full forensic investigation taking place and we are determined to find the people responsible for this hoax."
