A human skeleton has been found by a dog walker on a disused railway line on Merseyside, police have said.

It was discovered in an area thought to be an old fire pit on an embankment near the Liverpool Loopline in Fazakerley on Saturday.

Tests suggest the bones are of a woman of small build, aged 25 to 46. Her death is being treated as unexplained.

Police said the skeleton, found close to Blackthorne Road, could have been there for up to seven months.

It is believed that a pendant with an image of the Madonna, found nearby, could belong to the woman.

The area was cordoned off while forensic experts investigated.
