Liverpool Coastguard called to rescue man at Southport

A man was rescued after he got into difficulty off the Merseyside coastline in the early hours.

Liverpool Coastguard were called out to rescue the man, who had gone into the water from the beach at Southport at about 05:20 BST.

He was transported back to the shore by the lifeboat crew and taken to hospital for treatment, a spokesperson for the coastguard said.

He is not thought to have suffered serious injury.
