An 83-year-old man was bound and gagged and then beaten by a burglar who he interrrupted when he arrived home in Southport.

The man was left "traumatised" by the incident, which happened on Manchester Road close to midnight on Wednesday.

He was treated in hospital for facial injuries. Cash and a TV were stolen from his home.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and burglary. Police said enquiries were continuing.

A 60-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods.

Both people arrested are from the Southport area.

Merseyside Police Ch Supt Nikki Holland said: "This was a despicable incident that has left an elderly man traumatised."
