The original deeds for Aintree Racecourse have been sold at auction for £6,800.

The leather-bound charred documents, which date back to 1838, were recovered from a solicitor's office after it was bombed during World War II.

They contain the names of the 40 shareholders of the Liverpool-based Aintree Racecourse Company.

Liverpool auction house Cato Crane said the deeds had been valued at between £7,000-10,000.

Names on the list of the original shareholders include the Mather family of Allerton.

Auctioneer John Crane said the name of the vendor could not be revealed but he believed the deeds would remain on Merseyside.
