A man charged with murdering a woman in Liverpool has died after he was found "unresponsive" in his prison cell following a court appearance.

Brian Hull, 52, of Tewit Hall Close, Speke, was remanded to HMP Liverpool by the city's Crown Court on Monday for a plea hearing in July.

He was found at about 16:25 BST.

Mr Hull was charged after Shirley Mercer, 43, was found with stab wounds in the hallway of a house in Tewit Hall Close, Speke, on 28 March.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "HMP Liverpool prisoner Brian Hull was found unresponsive in his cell at approximately 4.25pm on Monday 14 April.

"Paramedics attended but he was pronounced dead at 5pm."

"As with all deaths in custody, the Independent Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will conduct an investigation," he added.
